Why Steam Deck works for music
Steam Deck runs Linux with full desktop capabilities. DAWG runs natively on Linux, so it works without any special configuration. The built in gamepad gives you dedicated controls for navigation and transport. The touchscreen works for grid interaction. And the USB-C port lets you connect MIDI keyboards and audio interfaces.
Controls
- Trackpads - precise cursor control for placing notes on the grid.
- Touchscreen - tap cells directly like on a tablet.
- D-pad and sticks - navigate between instruments, pattern slots, and menu sections.
- Triggers and bumpers - transport controls (play, stop, record).
- USB-C - connect a MIDI keyboard or USB hub for full studio setup.
Recommended setup
- Minimal: Steam Deck + built in speakers or headphones. Use the trackpad and touchscreen to tap out beats.
- Better: Add a USB-C hub with a small MIDI keyboard. Play melodies by hand while using the gamepad for transport.
- Full setup: Dock the Steam Deck to an external display, connect MIDI keyboard and audio interface. You now have a full desktop music workstation.
Getting DAWG on Steam Deck
Download the Linux version of DAWG from itch.io. You can run it directly in Desktop Mode or add it as a non-Steam game to launch from Gaming Mode.
Performance
Steam Deck has more than enough power for DAWG. The audio engine is optimized for real time performance with zero garbage collection, so you won't experience dropouts even with all 9 instruments active and effects running.
